WOODEN SCULPTURES THROUGH THE YEARS

Markku Lehmuskallio's (b. 31.12.1938 in Rauma) sculpture exhibition at Laterna Magica 15.11 – 2.12.2023

I have carved wood from the 1970s until today. In 1963, I graduated from the Tuomarniemi Forest School as a forest technician. I practiced the profession corresponding to my education until 1969.Since then, I have earned my living by shooting and directing films. For me, sculpting has been a therapeutic activity to release the pressures of the stressful film work.

WHERE DO THE SUBJECTS OF MY WOODEN PAINTINGS COME FROM?

I can't answer that exhaustively. They are not born out of thin air. Medieval folk church art is somehow reflected in my wooden pictures. Likewise, the pictures drawn and carved by the northern indigenous peoples. What is important to me is the freedom of carving. I can make the kind of pictures I want. No one controls my photos. Some people like them and some people don't. The wind blows however it wants.
