Exhibition opening on Night of the Arts August 18th from 5-7 PM.
Meet the Artist at the gallery on Saturday August 20th from 1 -2.30 PM. Daniil Nemirovsaja will attend via zoom from Ukraine.
This exhibition combines works by mother and son, Ukrainian Julia and Daniil Nemirovskaja separated by the ongoing war.
Julia Nemirovskaja escaped to Helsinki last spring after Russia attacked her home country Ukraine. With her was the youngest child in the family while the rest of the family stayed in Kyiv.
Julia (b.1967) is a professional artist from Kyiv. He graduated from The Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts and is a member of the Ukrainian Artists' Association. Painting is daily therapy for her on this refugee journey. In her aquarelle paintings depict the every day beauty of Helsinki. Many works depict both Julia herself as well as her young daughter.
Julia's grown up son Daniil Nemirovskaja is an artist just like his parents. Daniil (b.1993) lived his childhood in Mariupol and lives and works in Mariupol and Kyiv. Daniil is a member of the Ukrainian Artists' Association and his works have been shown in museums in Mariupol, Chernihiv, Kmytiv and Kyiv.
In contrast to her mother's colourful works Daniil's works in this exhibition are intensive prints in black and white. The works depict the architecture and people Daniil has encountered in Kyiv on 2019-2021, before the war. The people in these works have been forced to flee the country and are scattered all around Europe.
There are no winners in this war but the beauty in moments and meetings in between people keep the hope alive.
All the works in this exhibition are for sale and proceeds are donated to support the Nemirovskaja family.
