Exhibition opening on the Night of the Arts, August 15th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Through Four Trick Pony, Pia Andell and Mina Laamo investigate what happens if you try and snap out of the story? What are the alternative ways of telling about the world? How to aim for a common, unspoken collective memory? Do we need a story or can its ultimate purpose, the effort to emotionally reach another person, be achieved without it?
The work is about people, a little about animals, and concerns everyone. It's gentle. Everything that the prevailing time is not. The work is built from the small moments of life. It is suitable for people of all ages who experience it in their own way: it evokes the viewer's own experiences and may even create nostalgic moods.
Four Trick Pony is a documentary installation based on an organic algorithm. The work consists of three prime number-based moving image compilations (7, 11 and 13 min) and one prime number soundtrack (17 min), which, when repeated, constantly create new audiovisual combinations and new possibilities for interpretations.
The work is unique at every moment and will never be repeated the same. There is no story in the work, but it is based on a moment and an observation, just like life. The interpretation of the work begins when the exhibition visitor enters the space and ends when she steps out. The viewer chooses where to direct the attention. In this way, the visitor actively participates in the creation and meaning of the work, and is not just a recipient.
The starting point for the work has been the artists' observation of the limitations of film storytelling, the narrowing of freedom, and the demand for a story that comes across everywhere. Four Trick Pony is an installation born from the need to challenge what we talk about when we talk about the freedom of art and the significance of art and emotion in convergence.
The work debuted in Turku Art Museum on 2020-2021.
Pia Andell (b.1964) has directed documentary and fictional films, which have been shown and awarded at important festivals both in Finland and abroad. Andelli's latest completed film, Kesken (2024), was awarded the best Nordic drama at the Västerås International Film Festival.
Mina Laamo (b.1978) directs documentary films with a strongly visual approach to the subject. In her films, she has examined sadness, the experience of inadequacy and the fear of the unknown. The last film Surunkesyttäjät was in cinemas in the spring of 2022. Laamo is currently working on a documentary Nature Document about dying birds, which explores the human relationship with nature.
