Ville Pirinen (b.1973) was born in Kitee and lives in Tampere. He is a comics artist and writer and musician. His exhibition in Laterna Magica's Tile and Cellar galleries consists of both older material and works that have been made for this exhibition with the said brush pen.
Exhibition opening on Tuesday May 23rd from 5-7 PM. Warm welcome!
Ville Pirinen describes his exhibition: "I started drawing, and more specifically started drawing comics even before I knew how to read or write. As a teenager I scribbled with my felt tip pen conjuring up countless copies of super hero, underground, horrror, punk and art comics and visuals.
When reaching the age of majority drawing lead me to the twilight zone that is known as a career in illustration. That in turn lead into many more scribbles in form of illustration work, degree in art school, vagabond lifestyle and compromises in commercial context. During my 30 year "career" my personal relationship with drawing has altered hundred times in many ways: expanded, gotten more intensicve, cooled down and bounced wildly between adoration and torturous agony.
This exhibition in Laterna Magica's catacombs has given me a possibility to find pure joy in drawing. I have concentrated on the details and mannerism even with the cost of the whole. I have frolicked in my comfort zone with these drawings and dabbled with subjects tha have been close to my heart and artistic mind since childhood.
I think the resulting exhibition could be considered to be quite typical for a nearly 50 years old, grey bearded comics nerd. As in really great, if you're into that sort of thing and otherwise also a lot better than something worse.
